INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to find about the effect of pre-pitching shoulder-joint static stretching on improvement of performance (ball speed and flexibility) and prevention of injury(musculoskeletal pain and neuromuscular fatigue).
METHOD: Thirty one pitchers were selected as study subjects from high school baseball players registered on Korea Baseball Association (KBA). Wilcoxon signed rank test, a non-parametric statistical method, was conducted to test mean shifts of joint mobilization range, pain, fatigue ball speed before and after the shoulder-joint static stretching, and correlation analysis was conducted to test variables related to ball speed after the shoulder-joint static stretching.
RESULT: There were statistical differences in flexibility, fatigue, and ball speed depending on shoulder-joint static stretching.
CONCLUSION: The results showed that a one-time application of shoulder-joint static stretching was effective in improving ball speed, as well as increasing flexibility, of high school baseball players, and partially significant results concerning neuromuscular fatigue could be drawn therefrom. Therefore, this study could serve as basic data actually testing the effects of helping athletic performance improvement and injury prevention.
